Money matters can be downright scary! Conquering financial fears

Halloween is upon us!  For many of us, it brings memories of scary music, creepy monsters and fun costumes.  Do you remember walking up to the homes of strangers to get to the next piece of candy? It was one of the most exhilarating nights of the year. As a child, though, it was also one of the scariest nights because it was DARK outside.

As we grow up, we realize there are worse things to be afraid of than the neighbor’s sppoky Halloween decorations. And while we still may like to indulge in exhilarating activities that push our limits of courage, being in the proverbial “dark” is the last thing we want in certain areas of our lives, especially when it comes to our finances.

What’s lurking in the financial shadows?

Whether we’re finding our way through the dark in our business or personal lives, there are unknowns that could turn into pitfalls if we aren’t prepared.

What’s scary to you in your business?  Are you trying to expand, but not sure how?  Do you need more capital invested?  Less debt? The answers to these questions can be terrifying for some.

As an individual – are you scared about being able to save while spending during the holidays? What can you do to cut spending while the media is hyping for you to buy, buy, buy?  What can the family as a whole do to trim expenses and increase income?

Are you worried about how your elderly parent is going to manage paying her bills? Perhaps she writes a check as $50025.00, as that’s how she understands the amount five hundred and twenty five dollars.  What problems could crop up because of that, and what support does she need to get this situation under control?

All of these are extremely valid fears. But each one of them, if faced head on, can be managed with practical strategies that will take you to your goals and deliver peace of mind.

A practical lesson in facing fears.

Here’s a quick story about how easy it is to overcome fear with the right tools and support in place.

A few weeks ago, I was able to conquer two of my own fears – heights and strenuous physical activity.  Finding myself way out of my comfort zone, I was on an aerial obstacle course, walking high above the ground on narrow strips of wood!  I was able to complete the course by following directions and starting simple. Of course, I had to be brave enough for the first steps! I tackled the easiest level  – the yellow course. I then proceeded to the more difficult green, then the blue, where I was 30 feet above the ground. I still can’t believe I accomplished so much!

The key to facing my fears that day was accepting support from the guides and my friends. I never felt I was facing the obstacle course on my own. Every step of the way I had someone encouraging me and giving me practical advice that got me through to the next level.

It works in finances, too.

The same strategy I used to overcome my fear of heights and strenuous activity can work for you. It takes bravery to take the first step – but with support you can easily navigate through the scary dark parts of your financial matters and rise above any fears about your financial past, present and future.

At Price Turner CFOs, we give our clients the tools, encouragement and practical knowledge that help their businesses to expand, their families to manage and grow their finances, and their elderly relatives to streamline the task of managing monthly income and bills.
