Ready to grow? Get out of your comfort zone!

It’s not even February and we’ve already had our third major snowstorm this season! A lot of people I know complain about the snow because of the havoc it wreaks. But not me – I love the snowy weather and the surrealism it brings to every day life. And for the past three years I’ve learned to use it to my benefit when I test my strength and step way outside my comfort zone.

So what is it that I do to push my limits? If you guessed “dog sledding in Canada”, you’d be correct! Camping out in 0ºF temperatures at Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario for three days with no creature comforts (not even running water), I’m way out of my norm. But even though I’m cold, tired and forced to fetch water from a nearby stream, the biggest challenge is handling the six strong dogs who are pulling my sled – it’s much more difficult than I would’ve imagined. Each dog has a will of its own, so to drive the dogs and pull them together as a team, I must be confident, know exactly where I’m going and be able to clearly communicate with them – all while flying through the snow at 25 mph! It’s fun and invigorating and leaves me with the feeling that I can conquer the world.

Of course, I realize through this experience that I can’t conquer the dog sled – or the world – without some help. For example, my dog sledding guide is my brother. I’m able to participate in this unlikely sport because I have a trusted, trained expert as my coach and my guide. He looks out for me, helps me avoid pitfalls and encourages me to take on more challenges every time we head out.

Get out there!
