Love and Marriage and Business?!

I’m the proud mom of a newlywed! And yes, it’s time to gush about how magical the day was and how beautiful my daughter and her new wife looked. The love surrounding these two amazing women was amazing and it was one of those days you wished would never end. I’ll refer to them as K&V for the rest of the story.

Of course before the big day, came all the planning (that K&V did – I was involved very little at the periphery) and I realized how many of the situations K&V faced, we also face as business owners.

A few examples I wanted to share:

Vendors

K&V worked with a variety of vendors and one of their main wishes was to work with as many women-owned businesses as possible. Their DJ, caterer, day-of-coordinator and cupcake vendor hit that mark. They were ecstatic they found such fantastic vendors to support.

In business, look for the vendors you want to work with, the ones you know will work well with you. You wouldn’t work a vendor that made you uncomfortable, don’t work with a client that does either.

Support

K&V hired a day-of-coordinator to help keep the day on track and ensure everything ran smoothly-just for that day.

In business, support is vital. Decide what type of help you need and hire. Do you need a full-time employee or a part-time VA that works as a contractor? I don’t have ANY employees and I also don’t have an office. You might not need them either.

Contracts/Unexpected Events

The transportation company that K&V booked was bought out by another company and the new company gave them a new pricing structure – a year after the contract had been agreed and signed.  They weren’t sure if the new company was going to honor the original contract. Would they lose the money they had already given? Did they have to find another transportation company? K&V worked with the new company, showed them the original contract and the new company honored the contract.

In business, you need to have a lawyer or a team of legal partners to rely on when you need help. Legal situations can be tricky and without the advice of an expert, you could get into a messy situation for no reason. And as you create your own contracts with your legal counsel, plan for unexpected events and make sure you cover yourself and your clients.

Planning ahead

K&V’s venue was outdoors, so bathrooms were not part of the deal. They researched early on in the process and rented very fancy outdoor bathrooms on wheels. We are talking ones with air conditioning and music. They knew they wanted their guests to be comfortable, so this was a plan they put in place early in order to find the best.

In business, planning is everything. Look ahead and decide what is important in the coming year. Is it hiring team? Is it finding office space? You know what you want, so plan for it.

Insurance

K&V got married at an awesome private residence with a pool. They decided to purchase extra insurance, in case anything happened during the event, such as a glass breaking in the pool or someone getting injured.

In business, you can do the same. Every industry offers different types of insurance, so talk to an agent and look at options that best fit your needs.

Cutting Costs

K&V were amazing at cutting costs. They did flower arrangements on their own and instead of hiring a wedding planner that costs a lot more, they simply hired someone only for the day. They knew what they could do themselves and where they needed help, and only spent money where it was truly needed.

In business, you should always review your costs and where you can save. Are you paying someone to shred papers when you could do it yourself? Review yearly or even more often and make changes as needed.

Being Yourself

K&V put their own special touches all over the day. For instance, cupcakes over a wedding cake and an invitation that was more of a marketing brochure. A super creative addition to an otherwise very standard piece of mail. Check it out below!

In business, be yourself! Get the extra weird shaped business card if you’re a designer (or an accountant). Create the crazy website if you’re a visual artist. Your brand is yours for a reason. Stand out with your own ideas and creativity. You don’t have to live inside the box.

K&V are starting the next chapter of their lives and I couldn’t be happier for them. If you are ready to start a new chapter in your business life and want to talk money, I’m here. Let’s chat.
